Three different fields of study can be chosen in Võru State Upper Secondary School: sciences, natural sciences and humanities.
The field of sciences could be for you if:
- you want to develop and improve your skills and knowledge in mathematics, physics, and ICT and programming;
- you think real-world problems can be solved by mathematical/physical modelling and enjoy solving these problems;
- you see the beauty in geometrical regularity and the logic of mathematical proof;
- you wish to continue studies in the fields where the knowledge of mathematics is important (lawyers, doctors, architects, genetic engineers).
Diverse studying develops systematic and logical thinking, the ability to analyse and support statements, and solve complicated problems of mathematics and physics. The students can choose different physics, maths, programming and technical drawing elective courses and participate in both physics and maths practical training classes. For maths courses, students are divided according to their level in order to offer everybody convenient and customized teaching. Keener students can participate in different olympiads and contests.
The field of natural sciences could be for you if:
- you want to develop and improve your skills in chemistry, biology, geography, physics;
- you like to learn through practical research activities;
- you love spending time in nature and enjoy going on longer field trips and hikes;
- you want to improve your knowledge in the fields related to nature and science which also give an excellent basis for further studies.
Knowledge of biological, physical and chemical systems are acquired through diverse study programs (including experiments, tests, and research) that develop critical and creative thinking, making connections and promote teamwork skills. The students develop problem solving skills and the skill of making decisions in order to cope in social, artificial and natural environments. The study program of natural sciences uses integrated and diverse learning which means that all the subjects are closely related to each other. For example, experiments made in chemistry class are linked to biology as well as other sciences. In biology practical training classes the students learn the anatomy of plants and animals, examine and measure different environment indicators, acquire knowledge in plant propagation, etc. The school is involved in a partnership with different enterprises and scientific research facilities.
The field of humanities is meant for curious, creative, and cooperative students
- who are interested in the world around them and wish to become better informed of global and social developments, society, history, media and human relationships;
- who want to get to know the literature, culture and peculiarities of various nationalities as well as develop respect for individual, cultural and ideological differences;
- who want to develop their skill of different languages and participate in international projects;
- who wish in the future to engage in fields that concern people: from journalism to pedagogics, from social work to international relations.
Analytical, argumentation, and interpretation skills, verbal self-expression and coping in different social situations are developed through diverse learning activities. Also, public speaking skills, participating in discussions, argumentation and cooperation are taught. Different humanities-related elective courses broaden the perspective of the world, understanding of historical events and global developments, social life and human relations. Media critical approach evolves media literacy and supports shaping students into conscious, analytical and responsible media consumers. Our students can participate in projects and combine traditional learning with ICT and international collaboration.
